Kids Orthodontics
Children should have their first orthodontic consultation by the time they are seven. Early check-up helps spot any tooth problems, assess jaw growth and check if there is enough space for their adult teeth.
In certain situations getting braces or orthodontic care early on is very important for kids to minimise the severity of the foreseeable dental problems, correct an existing dental problem or to simplify a future orthodontic treatment, when your child is older. This type of treatment is called Interceptive Treatment or Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment.
Dr Elena Tamas likes to simplify the treatments for children and to make them comfortable, safe and create a positive experience so they can have healthy teeth and bright smiles for life.

F.A.Q.
Is orthodontic treatment painful for my child?
Having braces fitted is not painful. However some discomfort is normal during the adjustment period but the pain is often mild and temporary.
How does my child clean their brace?
Our team will give your child personalised instructions on how to look after their teeth and appliances. Your child will learn the right brushing technique and will have to spend a little more time on brushing.
What if my child has a problem with their brace?
In case of emergency we will see your child as soon as possible to help resolve their problem. Patients’ care is very important to us and we are always on hand to give advice and resolve the problem efficiently.
How will orthodontic treatment change my child’s day to day routine?
Orthodontic treatment typically shouldn’t disrupt your child’s daily routine. However, depending on the type of appliance used, their speech may be affected for a few days, and their food choices might need to change. Additionally, they may feel the need to clean their teeth more frequently.
Does my child still need to see the dentist while wearing braces?
It is important that your child continues their regular dental and hygienist visits during their orthodontic treatment.
How do I pay for my child’s treatment?
Once you have decided to start treatment with us one of our team members will be in touch to discuss various payment options. A deposit towards treatment payment means remainder can be spread over a twelve month period, interest-free by direct debit or standing order. Finance options are available upon request.
Braces or Aligners Phase 1 – Interceptive treatment (before the age of 10)
While most children will not need orthodontic treatment at this age there are certain reasons why early, or Phase 1, orthodontic treatment is recommended. Phase 1 orthodontics prevents more serious orthodontic problems from developing as the child grows, which is why it is important to address these types of problems early.
In young children, we might use braces or aligners for a very limited period of time. They are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances, such as expanders, which can enhance the treatment effect and shorten the overall duration. We will be seeing your child for regular review appointments while waiting for all the permanent teeth to come through.
When is Phase 1 orthodontics recommended?
Thumb or finger sucking habit past the age of 4, protrusive teeth. early or late loss of baby teeth, crowded teeth, crossbites, underbites.
Braces, Aligners or Lingual braces (for Teens or
after the age of 10)
Once all the permanent teeth have erupted, we will evaluate your child’s need for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. This is classed as phase II treatment, to finalise the alignment of teeth and bite for patient who have had Phase 1 treatment during ages of 6-9 yrs, but can also be used as standalone treatment for children from the age of 10. Braces will be placed on all teeth, with the treatment duration and procedures similar to those for adults (see the section on Adult Orthodontics)
Functional appliances
These are designed to correct jaw growth and alignment issues. This type of orthodontic appliance works on both upper and lower teeth at the same time and it can be either fixed to the teeth or removable. Examples include the Twin Block and the Herbst appliance, which guide the jaws to grow in a better position.
Expanders
RME (rapid maxillary expansion) appliances or expanders are used to widen the upper jaw to correct crossbites and create more space for crowded teeth. They are adjusted over time to gradually expand the jaw. Childhood is the ideal time for this type of treatment as all the structures of the facial skeleton are interconnected and it is important for all to develop harmoniously. Our expanders are 3D printed metal appliances which removes the need for an extra appointment to use separators to create space between teeth.
Removable appliances
Removable appliances are used to correct simple dental problems, especially for children who still have baby teeth. These appliances are tailored, made, and adapted to meet each child’s specific needs. Children can choose their own colours and designs, making their orthodontic journey as fun and comfortable as possible.
Retention
Retainers are used to hold teeth in place after braces are removed. They can be fixed (wire bonded to the back of the front teeth) or removable. The removable ones can be worn full-time or only at night. Depending on the complexity and the type of treatment we have performed, we will be individualising the wear time and design of the retainers.
